Search has quietly changed. When someone types “best interior designer in KL” or “which real estate agency in Johor should I use” into ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google’s AI Overview, they get a direct answer. Not a list of blue links. An actual recommendation.
And if your business isn’t mentioned, you don’t exist in that moment.
This is what AI Search Optimization is about. It’s not replacing SEO. It’s the next layer on top of it.

Why most Malaysian businesses are invisible on AI search
AI systems pull information from what’s published about your business online. Reviews, articles, citations, your website content, what other websites say about you.
If your online presence is thin, inconsistent, or poorly structured, AI has nothing to work with. It picks businesses it can understand and verify.
The businesses showing up in AI answers right now tend to have a few things in common. They have clear, structured content on their website that explains what they do, who they serve, and where they operate. They have consistent mentions across trusted sources. They have reviews. They have content that answers the actual questions their customers are asking.
None of this is new. But the way it gets used by AI systems has changed the stakes.
What about Google SEO?
Still essential. Google handles the majority of searches in Malaysia, and that isn’t changing anytime soon.
But Google itself is now showing AI Overviews at the top of results for a growing number of queries. So even on Google, the question is no longer just “do I rank on page 1?” It’s “does Google’s AI mention my business when someone asks a relevant question?”
SEO and AI search optimization are not separate strategies. They overlap significantly. Good SEO practice, proper site structure, strong content, authoritative mentions, builds the foundation for both.
What Malaysian businesses should be thinking about now
Start with your website content. Does it clearly explain what you do and who you serve? Does it answer the questions your customers actually ask before they contact you? Is it written for people, not just for search engines?
Then look at your presence outside your website. Are you mentioned on relevant directories, publications, and industry sites? Are your business details consistent everywhere? Do you have genuine reviews on Google?
These are not complicated changes. But most businesses haven’t done them properly, which means there’s a real opportunity right now for those who do.
The businesses that move early will have an advantage
AI search is still early in Malaysia. Most competitors aren’t thinking about this yet. That’s exactly why it’s worth paying attention to now, before it becomes crowded.
