You did the right thing. You claimed your Google Business Profile, filled in your address, maybe added a few photos. You figured the calls would start coming.
But they didn’t.
This is one of the most common frustrations I hear from Malaysian business owners, from clinics in Shah Alam to restaurants in Johor Bahru to car workshops in Petaling Jaya.
The problem isn’t that Local SEO doesn’t work. The problem is usually the profile itself.

Your business category might be too vague
Google uses your primary category to match your profile to the right searches. If you run a skin clinic and you picked “Clinic” or “Medical Services,” you’re too broad. Try “Skin Care Clinic” or “Aesthetic Clinic” instead. The more specific you are, the better chance you have of appearing when someone searches for exactly what you offer.
You’re not responding to reviews
Reviews matter for two reasons. One, Google uses them as a signal of trust and activity. Two, potential customers read them before deciding to call. A dentist in Subang Jaya with 40 reviews and no replies looks less trustworthy than a competitor with 15 reviews and a personal response to each one.
It takes two minutes to reply. Most businesses don’t bother.
Your description doesn’t use location or service keywords
You get 750 characters in your business description. That’s free space to tell Google and your customers what you do and where you serve. Most businesses write something like “We provide quality services to our valued customers.” That tells nobody anything.
A better version mentions your city, your services, and your customers. Something like: “We’re a halal catering service based in Klang Valley, serving corporate events, weddings, and private parties across Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.”
The profile looks inactive
When did you last add a photo? When did you last post an update? If it’s been six months, your profile looks like a business that might have closed. Google Maps favors profiles that show consistent activity.
You don’t need to post every day. But a photo or update once or twice a month makes a difference.
You haven’t used the Services section
Inside your Google Business Profile, there’s a section where you can list individual services with descriptions. This is one of the most underused features for Malaysian businesses. Each service is an opportunity to include keywords that match what people are actually searching for.
If you’re a property agent in Johor Bahru, don’t just list “Property Services.” List “Residential Property Buying,” “Commercial Property Rental in JB,” and “First-Time Home Buyer Consultation.”
Before you spend more on ads or backlinks
Most businesses try to fix slow lead generation by throwing money at Google Ads or hiring someone to build backlinks. Sometimes that’s the right move. But if your Google Business Profile is weak, you’re starting with a leak in your bucket.
Fix the profile first. It costs nothing except your time.
If you’re not sure where to start, go into your GBP settings today and check each of these five areas. You might be surprised how much low-hanging fruit is sitting there.
