This is more common than people think, and it’s usually not because Local SEO doesn’t work. It’s because the profile itself has gaps that are holding it back.
Here’s what I check when a Malaysian business owner tells me their GBP is set up but not converting:

The business category is too broad. Google uses your primary category to decide when to show your profile. “Services” or “Company” isn’t enough. If you run an accounting firm in Kuala Lumpur, your category should reflect that specifically.
Reviews exist but no one is responding. Google sees engagement signals. Customers see personality. A profile with 30 reviews and zero replies looks like nobody’s home. Worse, potential customers don’t know if you’re still active.
The business description wastes its potential. You get 750 characters. Most businesses write two generic sentences. Use that space to mention what you do, where you serve (Shah Alam, Johor Bahru, Penang, etc.), and who your customers are.
The profile looks inactive. No photos added recently. No posts. No updates. Google Maps favors profiles that show signs of life.
Services and products aren’t listed. Inside GBP, you can add individual services with descriptions. This is free keyword visibility that most businesses skip entirely.
Local SEO in Malaysia is competitive in cities like KL, Selangor, and Penang. But a lot of businesses are competing with incomplete profiles against others who’ve put in a bit more effort.
Before you invest in backlinks or paid ads, spend 30 minutes inside your Google Business Profile and fix these basics.
